55 miles, 28 churches, 1 slightly crazy girl on a bike... Ride & Stride 2012
So Stephen's church in Brinkworth is part of the "historic Wiltshire Churches Group" and every year they have this cycle ride to raise money for the Historic Churches group http://wiltshirehistoricchurches.org.uk/Ride_%26_Stride.html Individuals basically decide to try and visit as many churches as possible between 10am and 6pm that day.
Last April I cycled from my house to Stephen's - it was a drizzly cold day in April and my toes went numb, but I enjoyed it and loved having the destination of the farm to get to.
As many of you know, I love the occasional long distance cycle, and this is just that. I don't normally ask for sponsorship, and just enjoy the journey, but this sounded crazy and fun and well, a bit of a challenge.
I think it will probably take me the full 8 hrs, although I should hope to do it faster, I can't really tell. I know that the 37miles direct took me 4.5hrs, and that was without popping in to chat to people in churches.
This is the list of churches I hope to visit, incase you are interested (R = refreshments are offered, T = they have a loo!):
Kingswood (2.5miles) Holy Trinity (R), Our Lady of Lourdes and St Mary's (T)
Soundwell (4.25 miles) St Stephen
Mangotsfield (5.75miles) St James
Pucklechurch (8.75miles) St Thomas
Westerleigh (11miles) St James
Wapley (12.5) I am not sure it's still a church - St Peter
Chipping Sodbury (18.75) John the Baptist and St Lawrence
Old Sodbury (20.75) St John (at the top of the steep hill!!)
Acton Turnville (24.75) St Mary's church
Nettleton (26.25) St Mary the Virgin (R)
Grittleton (29) St Mary the Virgin
Norton (34) I am not sure it's there, All Saints
Foxley Parish Church (36) (R)
Malmesbury (38.25) URC (TR), King's church, Abbey (R), Moravian, St Aldhelm, Holy Cross
Charlton (42.75) St John
Garsdon (44.25) All Saints
Lea (45.75) St Giles
Little Somerford (48) St John (R)
Dauntsey (50.75) St James (R)
Brinkworth (53) St Michael (TR)
If I cycle back to the farm will bring it to 55miles!
I may end up missing a few out (Charlton/ Garsdon and Little Somerford/Dauntsey) are the obvious ones.
Hopefully the sun will shine, I won't get weighted down with too many cakes and cups of tea and I will raise a bit of cash for the Historic Churches and also for the Brinkworth Parish Church. The money is split equally.
Get in touch if you'd like to sponsor me! You could sponsor me 20p for each church I visit and hopefully I will be taking about £5+ from you!
Thanks for reading!
